PADI Advanced Scuba Diver

 

After completion of your Open Water Diver course, there are many options for continuing education with our dive center. Ocean Connections offers many different courses sanctioned by PADI, please have a look at the PADI chart below which shows how you may progress through the PADI system.

Where to begin?

During the Advanced Open Water course there are a number of areas that you may specialize in, from Photography and Night diving to Wreck diving and Fish Identification.

PADI's Advanced Open Water Diver course includes five adventure dives and allows the student to gain experience in a number of different specialty diving areas. These adventure dives can also be completed individually. Your Advanced Open Water course could be the stepping stone to become a specialty diver or a Master Scuba Diver. Deep Diving

Deep diving is fun and exciting but it takes extra planning and good buoyancy control to safely complete a deep dive. During your advanced course you will learn techniques for planning deep dives, how to use the appropriate safety equipment needed for deep diving and the effects of nitrogen narcosis, a narcotic, physiological effect of breathing compressed gas at depth.

Scuba Diving Navigation

The Navigation specialty diver course teaches you how to use the compass to estimate distance underwater, navigate in square and triangle patterns and how to use the natural features of the dive site to find your way around underwater.

Night Diving

After diving during the day you will be amazed to see how different is it to dive at night. Most reef fish go to sleep and the crustaceans and invertebrates come out to roam. Octopus, lobsters and king crab are just a few of the creatures you can only see at night as well as natural bioluminescence and Roatan's famous "string of pearls".  Night diving is a must do for all serious divers.

Peak Performance Buoyancy

Buoyancy control underwater is very important in reducing a diver's impact on the reef as well as helping to conserve air and drop some unwanted pounds off of your weight belt. During this dive students will review the buoyancy skills from the Open Water Diver course and learn some new, advanced techniques for good buoyancy control underwater.

Photography

With the advancement of digital photography, so has underwater photography advanced in the last few years. You will be surprised to learn how easy it is to take good photos and video, once you know how, with basic underwater cameras. During this dive, students will learn the basics of body positioning, subject composition, framing and basic editing techniques.

Wreck diving

Wreck diving is one of the most technical and exciting areas of scuba diving today. During the dive students will visit the El Aguila wreck dive site, a 70m Peruvian cargo vessel sunk for recreational diving purposes in 1996. This wreck is home to many resident groupers and two large green moray eels.

Naturalist

A Naturalist specialty diver will learn to identify the large number of fish, crustaceans and coral found in the Roatan reef system. Students will identify five species from each underwater kingdom, as well as observe the relationships between coral growth and structure, find some fish cleaning stations and explore the shallow reef zones overlooked by most divers.

Fish Identification

These dives will focus on fish species, students will learn identification techniques and observe fish behavior and morphology.

PADI Rescue and EFR courses

The PADI Rescue Diver course is one of the first steps to becoming a diving professional and is one of the toughest but most rewarding PADI courses available. The course begins with Emergency First Responder (EFR), a one day course where students will learn CPR for the water, basic first aid, AED training and first aid for hazardous marine life injuries. This is followed by 3 days of Rescue training. Students will learn self rescue techniques, managing panicked and tired divers, in-water rescue techniques and accident scene management. On the final day, students will be put to the test with three final scenarios where they will use the skills they have learned to properly manage a number of different crisis.

Master Scuba Diver is the highest non-professional rating that a diver can achieve. Master Scuba Divers must complete the Rescue and EFR courses as well as five PADI specialties of their choice.
